Randal Kelly was born August 2, 1905
in Cree, County Clare, Ireland, the fifth & youngest child of Elizabeth
Behan and John Alphonsus Kelly. Elizabeth passed away when Randal was
a young child, and shortly after John died in 1926, Randal immigrated
to the United States. He served in WWII in the Pacific Theater as a
mechanic, where he claimed he learned the use of a bottle opener for
his future career. Randal married Margaret Mendus in 1943, and four years later, after the birth of their oldest child, Mary, Kelly began bartending at the Westport Inn. In October of that year, Randal bought out one of the partners, Leo Ghent. Kelly and Art Brock were partners until Art died in 1977, when the place officially became Kelly’s Westport Inn. Kelly hired a young Mike Leahy in 1968. Mike’s outgoing personality fit in well at Kelly’s, where he worked for nine years, until his “personality” ultimately led him to alcohol abuse treatment. Kelly saw the wonderful changes in Leahy, primarily because of the assistance he received from the Welcome House. Kelly’s and its many friends have been supporting the House since the late seventies. Happy 100th Birthday, Kelly Welcome to the 28th Annual Shillelagh Open Golf Tournament! Welcome House is once again grateful to be the beneficiary of this long standing Kansas City golfing tradition. This year’s event is special in that it commemorates Randal Kelly’s 100th Birthday. Mr. Kelly was instrumental in helping Welcome House get started many years ago. Sons Pat & Kyle have continued the tradition, with all proceeds going directly to support the programs described on page seven. Tribute must also be paid to Welcome House co-founder John Cashen, who passed away May 8th,2005. John’s dedication, personal sacrifice, and sustenance over the years helped transform Welcome House into one of the premier facilities of its kind in the Midwest. It is our sincere wish that you truly enjoy this day. May your drives be long and straight, your approaches accurate, and your putts only one! The Board, Staff, and Residents of Welcome House genuinely appreciate your support. God Bless... Greg Roark Executive Director

The Welcome House, Inc. program of recovery is based upon the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program of recovery. Each man lives at Welcome House and is required to find and maintain a full time job.
